Locally known as mrangi,bixa has been in existence since the 1970s.
The crop does well and can e easily cropped with maize and beans, but end the intercropping when the plant starts being bushy.The planting season starts in May and June.
A bixa plant fully matures in 4-5 years but harvesting can start after a year.
Spacing of the plant is very important due to its nature to grow bushy.Have the plants growing 5 meter by 5 meters away from each other, this helps it to grow tall and bushy.
Bixa can germinate either from its seeds being sown or cutting part of the tree and transplanting.The plant has two season in a year and can be harvested for up to 20 years
 
Drought resitance
The spacing requirement also makes it easy movement in the plantation during harvesting and pruning.
It is disease and pests free.The ripen fruits dry and harden into red capsules, you can harvest up to 3000 kg.
Kenya Bixa Ltd offers a ready market by buying the produce from farmers at a cost of Kshs 65 per kg.
The fruit is harvested for its seeds, which contain  bixen, used in colouring cheese,fish,salad oil,margarine and cosmetics like lipsticks.
Harvesting
This involves cutting of mature pods from the tree.They shaded,divided, threshed and cleaned,dried and packed ready for collection.The fruits should be dried away from bare ground to keep them clean.
The waste from the fruit is good manure and can be mixed with other farm animal waste.
Bixa is used in production of up to 70% of world dye.

Climatic conditions
It does well in hot, humid and wet environment.This helps it be harvested for upto 20-24 years. In the third year you can harvest upto 8 kgs from a single plant.
Bixa Orellana  is one of the 4 major cash crops in Kwale county an done of the 7 in Lamu county.
