Site selection is important. Potatoes require soft, light fertile soils to develop large and uniform tubers. Avoid planting in heavy clays.
Only use well decomposed manure in your fields. Inadequately decomposed manure can lead to black leg and scorching of the sprouts.
Practice crop rotations to avoid the build up of pests and diseases. Avoid planting potatoes in the same location two seasons in a row.
Implement rotations with crops from different families. Potatoes are relatives of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants so avoid rotating with each other.
